Welcome to Shanghai Disneyland! I’m excited to share my personal guide to the best attractions and rides in the park. As an avid Disney fan who has visited multiple times, I’ll walk you through my top recommendations with an insider’s touch.
The first time I walked under the TRON arch at dusk, the track above me glowing electric blue against a darkening sky, I forgot I was in a theme park for a second. That is the thing about Shanghai Disneyland — the best rides do not just move you through space. They pull you into a world that feels completely real, if only for a few minutes. This guide covers every attraction worth your time, what to ride first, and what you can skip.
Quick Take
🎢 Top rides: TRON, Zootopia, Pirates
⏱ Longest waits: Zootopia and TRON often exceed 60–90 minutes
⚡ Worth DPA for: TRON, Zootopia
👶 Best for kids: Fantasyland and Toy Story Land rides
🕗 Strategy: ride the top attractions early morning or during parades

How to Use This Guide
Rides are grouped into three sections: Must-Do Attractions (non-negotiable for everyone), Family-Friendly Favorites (gentle rides and low height limits), and Thrill Seekers’ Paradise (intensity and speed). Each entry includes the land it sits in, height requirements in cm and inches, and whether Disney Premier Access (DPA — the park’s paid skip-the-line system) applies and which bundle covers it.
Full DPA bundle details and pricing are in our Disney Premier Access Guide.
The Absolute Must-Do Attractions
These three rides define Shanghai Disneyland. Whatever else your day looks like, ride these.
Zootopia: Hot Pursuit
-
Land: Zootopia
-
Type: Trackless dark ride
-
Duration: ~5 minutes
-
Height: No restriction
-
DPA: Single | Adventure Set 6 | Carefree Set 6 & 8 | Deluxe 11 & 15

No other attraction at Shanghai Disneyland generates queues like this one. On busy weekends the wait reaches 150 minutes — the longest in the park by a wide margin.
Zootopia: Hot Pursuit puts you inside a police chase — Tundratown’s snowy streets, the Rainforest District’s aerial gondolas, downtown in full chaos. The ride vehicles move freely with no fixed track, spinning and shifting direction so every angle feels unscripted. The moment the car nearly drops during a sky tram sequence surprised me even on a second ride.
The story is told mostly in Mandarin, but the visuals are clear enough that non-Mandarin speakers can follow along completely. What the designers got right here is scale — the sets feel enormous. You never feel like you are looking at a screen. You feel like you are inside the city.

My verdict: The best new ride in any Asian Disney park. No height limit means the whole family rides together. This is the one.
Worth the wait? Yes, even at 90 minutes — no height limit, no comparable ride anywhere else in the region.
Pro Tip: Head here the moment the park opens — straight to Zootopia before anywhere else. Waits build faster here than any other attraction. If your DPA bundle includes Zootopia, save it for mid-morning and use the opening window for TRON instead.
TRON Lightcycle Power Run
-
Land: Tomorrowland
-
Type: Launch roller coaster
-
Duration: ~2 minutes
-
Height: 122 cm / 48 in
-
DPA: Single | Adventure Set 3A & 6 | Carefree Set 8 | Deluxe 11 & 15

You board a motorcycle-style lightcycle — chest down, leaning forward — and launch through a translucent canopy into “The Grid.” The outdoor section is where the designers earn every bit of the hype. The glowing track curves over Tomorrowland and the sensation of speed feels cinematic.
This is not a long ride — two minutes, maybe less. But the Imagineers understood that the emotional peak, that first outdoor burst of acceleration, is all you need. The indoor sections are darker and quieter by comparison. The launch is the thing. At night especially, the glowing track against a dark sky makes this feel like a completely different experience than a daytime ride.

My verdict: Ride it at night if you can manage it. The visual payoff triples after dark. If someone in your group is nervous about thrill rides, TRON is more exhilarating than frightening — the launch is powerful but the track is smooth throughout.
Worth the wait? Yes up to 60 minutes — beyond that, use DPA or wait for the evening when the crowd thins slightly.
Pro Tip: Lines hit 75–90 minutes by 10 AM. Arrive right as the park opens and head here second (after Zootopia), or use DPA. A single rider queue is available on some days and moves significantly faster — worth checking at the entrance if you do not mind splitting up.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure
-
Land: Treasure Cove
-
Type: Boat ride
-
Duration: ~8 minutes
-
Height: No restriction
-
DPA: Single | Carefree Set 6 & 8 | Deluxe 11 & 15

I have ridden Pirates at four Disney parks around the world. This one is a different category of experience entirely.
The boats spin, slide sideways, reverse, and drop — all while surrounded by latest projection mapping and animatronics that blur together into something that feels closer to a film set than a ride. The climactic battle between Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones uses the full scale of the space in a way that surprised me the first time. Eight minutes is long for a dark ride. The pacing earns every second — there is no dead section. The designers were trying to make you feel caught between two forces larger than yourself, and for a stretch in that final chamber, it works.
The queue through the fortress courtyard is worth experiencing too — the story has already started before you even board.

My verdict: The crown jewel of Shanghai Disneyland. No height limit means everyone in your group can experience it. Even visitors who have never seen a Pirates film will enjoy it.
Worth the wait? Yes up to 45 minutes. The queue should be fast.

Family-Friendly Favorites
These rides suit families with young children, first-timers who prefer gentle experiences, and anyone who wants to see the park’s storytelling at a slower pace. If you skip coasters entirely, Soaring Over the Horizon is the single best ride in this section — start there.
Soaring Over the Horizon
-
Land: Tomorrowland
-
Type: Flight simulator
-
Duration: ~5 minutes
-
Height: 102 cm / 40 in
-
DPA: Single | Carefree Set 6 & 8 | Deluxe 11 & 15

Soaring lifts you into a hang-glider seat, raises you off the ground, and wraps you in a giant projected film of landscapes — the Great Wall, African savanna, the Arctic, Himalayan peaks. Wind hits your face. Scents of pine and ocean air are piped in as you fly over each location. The Shanghai version adds a finale over the city skyline and the park’s own castle that you will not find at other Disney parks.
No drops, no fast turns. But the illusion of height and open space is convincing enough that I have watched grown adults grip their armrests. The designers understood that the feeling of flying is more powerful than actual speed. Almost everyone on the ride exhales at the same moment near the end — a shared reaction that is itself part of the experience.
My verdict: My top pick for families with younger children or anyone who prefers to skip coasters. Beautiful, calm, and affecting. Sit in the front row if you can — the illusion is strongest without another row visible in your peripheral vision.
Worth the wait? Yes up to 60 minutes. Beyond that, use DPA — this one rewards patience but punishes impulse walking up mid-afternoon.
Pro Tip: Soaring consistently builds to 75–90 minute waits. Use DPA or arrive within the first 30 minutes of opening. This is worth prioritizing.
Voyage to the Crystal Grotto
-
Land: Fantasyland
-
Type: Boat ride
-
Duration: ~20 minutes
-
Height: No restriction
-
DPA: Single | Carefree Set 6 & 8 | Deluxe 11 & 15

A calm, 20-minute boat tour that circles the Enchanted Storybook Castle and passes through caves filled with scenes from Disney films — Aladdin, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and others. The finale takes you underground through the castle’s crystal grotto in a sequence of light and music that closes beautifully.
This is a breather ride. It exists to let you sit down, absorb some Disney storytelling, and take in the castle from the water. The outdoor sections are at their best at dusk when the castle lights up above you.

My verdict: Ride it in the evening for the best experience — the castle illuminated over the water is beautiful. On a tight one-day schedule it can wait, but it is a lovely 20 minutes if you have the afternoon. Perfect for grandparents and very young children who need a rest.
Worth the wait? Conditional — yes in the evening on a relaxed schedule, skip it if you’re racing the clock on a one-day visit.
Enchanted Storybook Castle — Once Upon a Time Adventure
-
Land: Fantasyland
-
Type: Walk-through attraction
-
Duration: 25–50 minutes
-
Height: No restriction
-
DPA: Not applicable

The castle itself — the tallest Disney castle ever built — deserves a long look from the Gardens of Imagination outside, from the water on the Crystal Grotto boat ride, and at night when it is lit from below. Walk around it slowly. The exterior is extraordinary.
Inside, Once Upon a Time Adventure retells Snow White’s story through glowing corridors and interactive magic mirrors. It is calm, visually pretty, and fully air-conditioned — which on a summer afternoon is reason enough. I enjoyed the clever lighting effects on my first visit. It is not technically dazzling compared to the headline rides, but it has a quiet charm.

My verdict: Go inside if you have a spare half hour or need shade and cool air. The walk-through is charming without being unmissable. The castle view from outside and from the boat is the real experience.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
-
Land: Fantasyland
-
Type: Family roller coaster
-
Duration: ~3 minutes
-
Height: 97 cm / 38 in
-
DPA: Single | Adventure Set 3B & 6 | Deluxe 11 & 15

A family coaster with swaying cars that rock side to side through corners as you swing past animated dwarfs sorting jewels in the mine. The swaying motion is the distinctive feature — it adds just enough unpredictability for riders who want mild excitement without real intensity.
The designers were aiming for giggles, not adrenaline, and they hit it. For families with children around 97–120 cm — tall enough to ride but not yet ready for TRON — this is exactly the right pitch.
My verdict: Essential if you are visiting with children in that height range. For adults without children, it is a pleasant ride but not a priority on a one-day visit. Ride it in the evening for a lit-up view of Fantasyland on the outdoor section.
Worth the wait? Yes for families with children under 120 cm — this is the right pitch for that age group. For adults-only groups, 30 minutes maximum.
Peter Pan’s Flight
-
Land: Fantasyland
-
Type: Dark ride
-
Duration: ~3 minutes
-
Height: No restriction
-
DPA: Single | Carefree Set 8 | Deluxe 11 & 15

You board a flying pirate ship and glide above miniature London at night, then onward over Neverland. The Shanghai version is longer and sharper than older versions of this classic ride. The emotional intention is clear — the designers wanted you to feel like a child looking out a bedroom window at a lit city below — and the ride delivers that feeling with care.
I ride it every visit. Not because it is technically impressive, but because it is one of the warmest rides in the park.

My verdict: Worth riding for the genuine warmth of the experience. Capacity is low, so lines move slowly. Ride it early or use DPA if it is a family priority.
Worth the wait? Conditional — yes under 30 minutes, no beyond that. Capacity is low and the line moves slowly for what is a 3-minute experience.
Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue
-
Land: Tomorrowland
-
Type: Interactive shooter ride
-
Duration: ~4 minutes
-
Height: No restriction
-
DPA: Single | Adventure Set 3A & 6 | Carefree Set 6 & 8 | Deluxe 11 & 15

You aim a laser gun at targets across a series of Toy Story-themed rooms while your vehicle rotates between scenes. The competitive score display between riders does most of the entertainment work — especially with kids who suddenly become very focused. Simple and bright.
My verdict: Great for families with children who enjoy interactive games. Adults without kids can prioritize other rides. Waits rarely build as high as the headline attractions, so it works well as a mid-afternoon gap filler.
Worth the wait? Conditional — yes under 30 minutes for families with children. Skip for adults-only groups.

Thrill Seekers’ Paradise
For riders who want intensity, speed, or the possibility of getting soaked.
Rex’s Racer
-
Land: Toy Story Land
-
Type: Shuttle coaster (pendulum)
-
Duration: ~1 minute
-
Height: 120 cm / 47 in
-
DPA: Single | Adventure Set 3B & 6 | Deluxe 15

A bright orange pendulum ride that swings back and forth, climbing higher with each arc until you hang briefly near vertical before swinging down. One minute of pure stomach-float. Short, sharp, and satisfying.
The theming is playful rather than immersive — it does not build much world around you, it just launches you back and forth against a Toy Story backdrop. For that reason it is a secondary thrill, not a headline experience.
My verdict: Good for thrill-seekers who want something physical between dark rides. Not worth a long wait. Hit it early or late when Toy Story Land is quieter.
Worth the wait? No — only if the line is under 20 minutes. Short ride, limited theming.
Roaring Rapids
-
Land: Adventure Isle
-
Type: River rapids ride
-
Duration: ~7 minutes
-
Height: 120 cm / 47 in
-
DPA: Single | Adventure Set 3A & 6 | Deluxe 11 & 15

Roaring Rapids offers a wild river adventure through Adventure Isle with the added excitement. You will get wet. How wet is luck — the raft rotates, so seat position is unpredictable. Lockers near the boarding area are available for phones and valuables.
The Adventure Isle setting is lush and atmospheric — one of the best-designed environments in the park. But the ride itself is straightforward — no real narrative arc or memorable finale. The designers built this one around the physical sensation of water and motion rather than story, and on a hot afternoon, that is exactly enough.
My verdict: Save it for a hot day when getting soaked is welcome, and ride it last so you are not walking around wet for the rest of your visit. Skip it entirely on a cool or rainy day.
Worth the wait? Conditional — yes on a hot day under 30 minutes, no in cooler weather or on a tight schedule.
Pro Tip: Check operational status in the morning — water rides occasionally close for maintenance. If you have a bag, stow it in the lockers before boarding.
Also Worth Knowing
These attractions do not fit neatly into the three tiers above but are worth being aware of.
Challenge Trails at Camp Discovery
-
Land: Adventure Isle
-
Type: Outdoor ropes course
-
Height: 106 cm / 42 in
-
DPA: Single | Adventure Set 3B & 6 | Deluxe 15

An outdoor ropes course with suspension bridges, cargo nets, climbing walls, and rope ladders in the Adventure Isle setting. Kids who need to burn energy after a morning of queuing will find this tiring in the best way.
My verdict: A strong option for families with children aged roughly 6–12 who want something physical. Adults without children can skip it.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
-
Land: Fantasyland
-
Type: Dark ride
-
Duration: ~4 minutes
-
Height: No restriction
-
DPA: Single | Deluxe 15

A classic slow-moving ride through the Hundred Acre Wood — Pooh’s daydream sequence, the blustery day, honey pots everywhere. Gentle, warm, and cheerfully built. The projections are clean and the characters are rendered with real affection.
My verdict: A comfortable, no-pressure ride for families with toddlers or anyone who wants a calm break mid-day. Skip it on a tight schedule and prioritize it if you have young children or grandparents who want something easygoing.
Worth the wait? No — fine under 20 minutes, anything longer and there are better uses of your time.
Woody’s Roundup
-
Land: Toy Story Land
-
Type: Spinning ride
-
Duration: ~7 minutes
-
Height: 81 cm / 32 in
-
DPA: Single | Deluxe 15

A spinning ride themed around Woody’s Roundup from Toy Story 2. You can control how fast the car spins. Bright, cheerful, and completely unthreatening.
My verdict: Best for very young children or anyone in your group who wants a low-key ride. Skip it if your party has any interest in the headline attractions.
My Take
If I had one day, here is the sequence I would follow:
- Zootopia: Hot Pursuit first the moment the park opens — walk straight there before the queue builds.
- Then TRON Lightcycle Power Run while the morning wait is still short.
- Use Pirates of the Caribbean as a natural mid-morning break — no height limit, long, and the queue itself is worth experiencing.
- Afternoon is for Soaring Over the Horizon with DPA, or hold it for a quieter window.
- End the night with TRON again after dark if you have the energy — the difference in atmosphere makes it feel like a different ride.
Following this sequence on a normal weekday, I’ve covered all three must-do attractions plus Soaring and a second TRON — five experiences — without a DPA bundle.
Travelling with young children? Zootopia (no height limit), Peter Pan’s Flight, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will make their day. Thrill-seekers should add Rex’s Racer and Roaring Rapids in summer as a finish.
Shanghai Disneyland is not the largest Disney park in the world. But the quality of its headline rides — especially Pirates and Zootopia — is unmatched. Go in with a plan, be at the gates when they open, and the day takes care of itself.
